GB groups smash fitness and fundraising challenges

news

1st Newport (Isle of Wight) and 7th Leytonstone GB community groups have both undertaken fitness challenges to raise money for their group.

In January, 1st Newport (IoW), as part of GB’s Living Well programme, set up a walking challenge with a target of £180. They decided to split any money raised 3 ways – between the Isle of Wight Foodbank, Revive, and their own group.

The leaders and members had to walk individually towards a group target of 400 miles or 800,000 steps from their church, Castlehold Baptist Church, to GB’s Support Centre in Derbyshire and back again.

Due to the support from their church, the fundraising target was increased to £400 to give the members an incentive to keep walking.

Joint Team Leader Vanessa Squibb says ‘To date we’ve raised £675 and feel amazed and grateful for the support. We’re very much looking forward to handing over two thirds of this to our nominated local charities on the Isle of Wight and planning a special event for our girls later in the year.’

As part of the Living Well programme, 7th Leytonstone group’s leaders were also inspired to set up a sponsored bingo well-being challenge.

Acting Team Leader Judith Smy says ‘During half-term the girls undertook physical challenges, chosen from the bingo card, from walking 10k, a cycle ride, 5k run, an online workout etc, and asked family/friends for sponsorship.

‘We set a target to raise £350, however we raised an amazing £730, which is absolutely incredible.

‘In addition to raising funds, we received positive, appreciative, feedback from parents, family friends and church members regarding GB and the support provided during these times via our Zoom evenings. The leaders are so grateful for all the support received and are thankful that we can continue the work of GB in Leytonstone to Seek, Serve, and Follow Christ.’
