On Saturday 18 May, 40th Birmingham were pleased to accept the invite from 59th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade to join them for the day at Peckwood Centre where the boys were spending the weekend. It was a blast from the past for some volunteers who remembered many happy weekends there in the 80’s and 90’s as young people.
13 girls, five parents, six volunteers, a baby and a group mascot attended the event and were blessed with good weather. All had a lovely day – girls joined the boys in relay races around the obstacle course and a treasure hunt for items starting with the letters in ‘Peckwood’ which they searched the woods and area to collect. After a picnic lunch, the group were into the woods again for den building followed by tea before heading home.
1st Goodrington and 1st Kingston joined together for their junior camp in May for a day visit to the New Forest Wildlife Park. Everyone had a great time and the otters at the wildlife park won everyone’s hearts!
For 1st Higham Ferrers’ last meeting of the year, it was only right that the group had their annual visit from the local ice-cream van – yum!
1st Timperley were best in show for the second year running at their local annual festival parade. Team Leader Rosalinda Fazackerley set the ball rolling for the group’s 2023 parade entry but never got to see her plans of returning to the festival come true and sadly passed away before the event. The group went on to win the ‘Rosalinda Fazackerley Memorial Trophy – Best in Show’ and were so pleased to know she would have been so proud.
Leader Jayne and daughter of Rosalinda says, ‘We are so fortunate to have a team of volunteers that want to get involved, so as along as we have these people we will continue to make Mum’s dream of being back in the parade come true, year after year.’
21st Castleford had a fun but very important session when lifeguards visited to deliver a water safety session to the group. The lifeguards had quizzes had banners and the girls had to spot the dangers in the garden, the beach and the river. The girls are taking part in a competition to do a water safety poster and these will be judged. The winner will a family swim voucher for the local swimming pool.
Team Leader Sam believes it’s an important skill for the young people to have and says, ‘In Castleford, we have the River Aire and many other natural beauty spots with water. It’s in the news most days about a young person losing their life. The lifeguards taught them float to live. ‘
